Do you think you may have an STD? Maybe you took a test but are doubting your results. There are a couple of different STD tests to go about, but you may wonder about the accuracy.

When done correctly, STD tests are accurate and can be performed by a medical professional. Even though at-home testing is an option, the accuracy rates vary for this type of testing. We at Positive Options can offer a free medical referral for STD testing today.

Common STD Symptoms

Do you think you may have an STD? Some STDs are symptomatic, and some are not. Whether you have symptoms or not, get tested right away. Here are some possible signs of infection:

  • Fever

  • Lower abdominal pain

  • Painful, burning urination

  • Unusual or odorous vaginal discharge

  • Pain during sexual intercourse

  • Sore, swollen lymph nodes

  • Unusual vaginal bleeding

Types of STD Testing

At-Home STD Tests

There are at-home STD test kits for HIV, chlamydia, and gonorrhea. This at-home testing works by you collecting your own urine sample or an oral or genital swab and then sending it to a lab.

Though this is a more convenient way of STD testing, it’s difficult to be sure of the accuracy when not done with medical oversight.

In-Office STD Testing

In-office STD testing is ideal, as medical professionals can walk you through the process the entire way and give you the clarity you need.

An STD can be diagnosed during a physical exam, blood tests, or a microscopic examination of a sore or fluid swabbed from the vagina, penis, or anus. The type of suspected STD will determine what type of test you may receive.

What if It’s Positive?

It’s important to go about additional STD testing if your first test is positive. If needed, get the treatment you need from your healthcare provider to prevent further infection.

At Positive Options, we can offer you free medical referrals so you can get the resources you may need during this time. You are not alone. Talk to us today.
